    Router Problemo

    Hey,

I'm behind a Netgear WPN824v2.  I've followed the directions on the portforwarding page and I'm still timing out.  Am I supposed to have the DXPort running and forwarding ports too, or is there some Connection Property in windows I'm supposed to change?  Any ideas would be excellent, cause this is pushing me towards some hard liquor.

    Thanks
    -Chris

    Re: Router Problemo

I've gone through the process about a near dozen times.  Following the instructions to the T.  I know the problem isn't with the port forwardings I setup.  Which makes me wonder if there could be another possible cause to this.

    Re: Router Problemo

From what you've said, I'm assuming you've done the port forwarding correctly. Also, you don't need DXport unless you need to force TA to use specific ports.

    1. Verify that your current IP (that is, your internal network IP - 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.0.xxx.xxx) corresponds with the one you specify in the port forwarding configuration). You should have set up a static IP prior to all of this (as mentioned on portforward.com).

    2. Check if you have a software firewall running that could be blocking the ports still (unlikely, since these usually notify you whenever a new program is attempting to access the internet, and asks you whether you want to block or allow).

    3. Check if your router also has a separate firewall function (it happens). If so, disable it.

    4. Do you have some sort of special network setup (university network, multiple routers, anything), or just a regular personal network (router + computers, directly connected to your ISP)?

    5. It does happen that routers fail to do what they're told. Use Google to find out if your router is a particularly troublesome one, and consider getting a new one (more importantly, a better one).

    6. Check with your ISP and see if they are blocking ports.

Often, the router you get from your ISP is a low-end one, which tends to be insufficient for any usage beyond browsing, reading your mail, and other completely ordinary everyday tasks. This doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with whether or not it successfully can forward ports correctly, but low quality loves company.

    Re: Router Problemo

    I check through the list.

    1) Ip is right
2/3) There is no firewalls blocking
    4) No special network, just ISP>Router>Computer
    5) All the problems people have seem to be with the wireless signal.
    6) I'll be lucky if I can get a live person within the next week.

I was viewing the log on the router to see what was going on.  Everything from Phoenixworx.com is being allowed.  There's no known problems with Windows 2k pro and phoenix worx?

    Thanks for the help
    -Chris

    Re: Router Problemo

There are no problems with the PW client and any version of Windows as far as I know, but time-outs have got nothing to do with the client, only TA not being able to connect due to blocked ports somewhere. You should time out if you use TA's multiplayer function without going through the client. Though it won't give you the error message, the same happens.

I trust you tried to join several different games when testing this? Keep in mind that it might be the other person's ports, not yours.

And for the record, it's phoenixworx.org, but I'm sure that's what you meant. ;)
