    Why do you play TA...?

    Hi all,

Sitting at work here, a bit sick of answering phones. Just though I'd throw this question out there.

Why, after over ten years of this game being out there do you still play TA? Or if you have retired why?

I myself have owned this game since the demo came out in So Fresh games magazine, Issue 16 (gods i'm a nerd). Still have that demo (and i like to collect stuff). Always went back to playing skirmish and finishing the campaigns even after owning other games (diablo2 AOE 1, 2 and 3, Command and Conquer, Warcraft 3 and many many others).

Didn't have a go at online TA until 3 months ago, loving the game more so. Although I am still of the opinion I suck at it still. Seems that TA is the only game that still gives me a decent challenge.

    Regards

the first rts game i ever played was warzone2100. ide play skirmish on that all the time, but when it came out it was close to impossible to play multiplayer. then my brothers friend gave me a total annihilation cd. i played skirmish on it for like 4-6 years untill i thought about online play. now i play because i have nothing else to do :P and because of the community (even tho it sucks sometimes :D)

Re: Why do you play TA...?

I myself had the demo as a kid (what was i age 8? maybe 7..... 6? lol) i got it from a PC world disk (issue 3 lolololol) and i palyed the *** out of those first 3 missions. heck i even looked at how much metal and energy i could make on the 3rd level by capping all the mexes and building all my units as constructions :P

so anyway i got into TA in 2001 at the age of 10. My class at primary school (year 5 and 6) played TA because our  teacher (cheeseboy777) was a TA nut. We had TA, CC and BT all installed with 3.1 and recorder, and with that we played alot of in class games as we had 2 computers in the room. I remember almost every morning wanting to go to school and play TA. in 2001 our class had its first major turniment. Me being the biggest game nut in the class won it that year then faced the teacher at the end of it and got annihilated. that year also held an in class map design compition, winner was made by the teacher.

2002 brought along annother turniment, which certain people got taught a secret tecnique (3 solar 4 metal, plant peewees repeat) thrown in there to get the numbers up. i was defeated in the 3rd or 4th round by TOBIG4U8 on the infamous Lake Shore which was heavily imbalanced.... he had a fucking warlord for crying out loud. (this of corse lead to my remake of Lake Shore, which i then preceded to kick his *** on once it was balanced a few years later)

Later that turniment TOBIG4U8 was knocked out by Dwang (whos on Warzone occasionally) and he was then bested by Xelent (who was on warzone a few weeks ago with his dailup connection) in the final round.

Cheeseboy777 eventually stopped playing TA a few years after i started on Zone with TOBIG4U8. Me and TOBIG were always fearly evenly matched and once we both took out cheese we knew we had hit the bit time. Tobig got broadband a long time befor i did and played alot more TA during that time than i did but we had the occasional lan battle over the years (such as last weeks 1v1s and krog battle)

I got broadband almost a year ago now and have still been playing TA even with my AMD 4600+ dual core 7600gt 2gig ram setup. i played supcom with cheeseboy777 again for a while until he got too busy with work and we no longer had our 2v2's on isis every night. After that point it was back to TA (after spending all my remaining money on ram and supcom+fa) so now im at home with a broken computer that needs a fan repair, a new graphics card and still has broadband playing TA a couple times a day, wether its a school day or weekend.

This of corse means that pritty much no matter what TA will always be on my agenda and no amount of WoW, wc3, AoE1-2-3-M, DoW, Q4, Doom3-2-1, CoD4, SupCom, FA, or anything else will drag me away from it for even a whole day.

TA is pritty much the stealer of my life. but i dont blame it. it is a great game that nothing can even compear too. No amount of fancy graphics or gameplay advances can defeat TA or improve it. Perhaps when Atari finnaly sells the million dollar machine we will see a nice TA2, but i dont think it will happen

Re: Why do you play TA...?

I think it was in 97' that i started playing TA, i bought a 233mmx technology cpu and had a monster 3d video card. I lived in a house with my brother and everyone seemed to come there with their computers. Mostly because my brother and i knew a guy named joel, who worked one floor below bill gates at microsoft. when it came to knowing how to get programs to work together we could figure them out quick. as a result we would have tcpip games on the direct connect cables to all of our computers. Later we found out that thats called a lan game. All we did with our comps was play TA. we worked as contractors on jobs that were high paying and spread out over time. so we set our own schedual.

When i moved out to Blaine washington, i found Boneyards. I immediately got the pent II 450 and a ISDN shotgun modem. and began to perfect the craft of killing commanders. Joy..... Ever since then i have only gotten good at one other game that is FPS and that is Unreal Tournament. I love this game because it allows me to use the skills i have for remembering complicated strings of information. Especially ones that people do repeatedly. hahaha,

I use to make people shut off their recorders to play me, not because i was ashamed of the loss if it happened, but because i knew they would want to see what the hell i was doing so well that was costing them the game. I learned from PCS_Sharky though, no matter how many people have the recording only a few will ever benefit from watching it. Turns out they were trying to keep people from cheating, or rather catch them in the act.

Dropping a whisper was worse than cheating i allways thought. I lived for those moments in the BY though. Padders worst nightmare.

      Good question CWG

    I am coming for you

Re: Why do you play TA...?

I bought it 1997 by chance when it came out and CC also the day that it came out. BT I thought didnt include anything worth having so that I did not buy. The game felt expensive of sorts but now after thousands of games I am glad I paid full price.

I didnt play much, only campaigns and some skirmish and 2 games on BoneYards, and went on with my aoe1nosiegeDM games until I felt I played it too much, scrathed my discs and from there on it's been TA.

Now I see that TA is a much better game and no other RTS still has any claim over it.

from 1998 onwards, little by little I went to play online. I started with MPlayer which was very nice with voice chat etc. Then I moved to MSN Gaming Zone and Phoenix Worx. CLF had a big thing going with PW so it came naturally. I even had 166MMX and 33.6 modem. No recorder back then that I can remember, skeets coming to shore on gow and flash running over dragon's teeth..

as years passed I played little more frequently, had some years off, played some more, some less, but I always felt that this is something that cant be forgotten. I used to like Ashap Plateau, SHERWOOD FFA and Gods of War FFA. I remember playing a lot of games with Mastah, Diablo and even RVD came to me if I remember playing with him a lot of GOW games..  I remember yipeeyahooo, JR_KROGOTHMSRT, jdog and a big bunch of people from my early times.

CLF was my first clan and I was loyal with 1 clan policy, until years later I joined PLU which consisted mostly of old CLFs, then I joined DGF which consisted of old PLUs..

I was also in Duke, Ak, MKD.

I started with FFAs, then later moved to 2v2s and now Im doing mainly 1v1s. That's just how it goes. I never enjoyed metal maps, big maps or reclaimable building maps. I dont like big games either. Mostly I play level1.

Now I have a lot of TA friends all over the world, I even went to one's wedding as the only foreigner. No regrets. Thank you all.

I've always thought of TA as a somekind of a gift from God as a game.
