PW won't let me join in a game or create a game. Either Lennox sent me a virus or somebody higher up pushed the wrong button. HELP!

Doubt he sent you a virus.

Does TA time out? Does it start at all?

Re: PW won't let me join or create a game

Same thing happens to me.  Ever since PW changed I have been timed out every time I try to join a game.

I tried reinstalling PW, reinstalling TA, turning off my firewall.

    Nothing works.

Darkstraw told me it might be my ISP.  I have Qwest.  Dr Zink, what do you have?

Re: PW won't let me join or create a game

lindar the green you and dr zink's problems are differnt

sounds like dr zink cant click the button at all which sounds like PW cant find his TA exe

you on the otherhand are having a timeout problem which means its

    1.router

    2.firewall

    3.isp

since you have said you arent on a network and have no router and your firewall is off, all that is left is your isp.

Re: PW won't let me join or create a game

You said this happened after PW changed? What change was that?

Also, you didn't mention anything about a router. Do you have one? If so, you might want to check into that.
If you do, you need to create some forward rules.
Forward ports 2300 through 2400 both TCP and UDP, plus 47624 TCP, to your internal IP.
http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm for help on specific router brands - locate your router in the list.

Re: PW won't let me join or create a game

Did you patch your TA installation up to version 3.1 (which is required for PW)? And if you think you did: The patch does sometimes upgrade the TA files in the backup folders created when instllaing the BT or CC expansion so make sure that the patch was applied correctly. If you are unsure how to verify the TA version check this link:

Tongue Tied [:S] Re: PW won't let me join or create a game

The PortForward site is outstanding.  However, in their list of applications they don't list either TA or PhoenixWorx and they provide info per application.  Should I just use the setting for Age of Empires or some other RTS?

    Thanks!

Re: PW won't let me join or create a game

Where it tells you to open the ports, instead of forwarding the ports it tells you to, forward 2300-2400 TCP UDP 47624 TCP

    That should do it.

Re: PW won't let me join or create a game

For the record, Age of Empires uses DirectPlay (a DirectX module) for multiplayer connections, just like TA. Though you shouldn't necessarily follow the Age of Empires instructions blindly.

Why? Because of the following, and this is important: there are two slightly different configs for DirectX 7 or earlier and for DirectX 8 or later. TA uses the DX7 config.

DirectX 7 or earlier: TCP and UDP 2300-2400 plus TCP 47624 (all both inbound and outbound for both hosting and joining respectively).
DirectX 8 or later: UDP 2302-2400 plus UDP 6073 (all both inbound and outbound, same reason as above).

I'm pretty sure that following the Age of Empires instructions would work in this case, but not necessarily for other games, in case your other game uses the other DX config. Therefore, whenever configuring a router or firewall for games, always check which DirectX version the game uses. On the other hand, you can just configure for both DX7 and DX8 while you're at it, and you won't have to think about it ever again. Wink [;)] That is, until you reset the router or re-install the firewall.

Microsoft's own article on this can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240429
Or just Google "DirectX ports" and that article is the first search result.
